Normal Stages of Hair Growth

Anagen
Anagen is the active or “growing” phase of the cycle when the cells in the root of the hair divide at a rapid rate. Hair grows approximately 1cm a month and can stay in this active phase of growth from anywhere between two and seven years. People who feel like their hair does not grow past a certain length have a shorter anagen phase than other’s whose hair grows longer.

Catagen
The catagen stage is the transitional part of the cycle and only lasts for around two to three weeks. Approximately 3% of all hairs are in this stage at any given moment. In this stage hair growth stops and the outer root sheath shrinks and attaches to the root of the hair. This forms a “club hair”, which is basically a hair that has stopped growing and is no longer in the active stage.

Telogen
Telogen is the resting phase in the hair growth cycle when the hair follicle is completely inactive. Normally 6% to 8% of all hair is in this stage, which tends to last about 100 days on the scalp.

Common Causes for Hair Fall:

1. Physical stress due to an illness, an accident, emotional disorders, or physical injuries
2. Hormone related or androgenic alopecia. Excessive consumption of alcohol, smoking, or an unhealthy diet
3. Genetic hair loss
4. Auto immune diseases, such as Alopecia Areata, Lupus, or any other illness where the body’s immune system attacks its own cells, including hair follicles
5. Chemotherapy
6. Medical conditions such as Anemia, Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
7. Thyroid disease

Some Shocking Statistics

• Nearly 40-50% of Indians are suffering from alopecia. Androgenic Alopecia or hormone related hair loss represents the most common cause of baldness in men.

• People having androgenic alopecia lose 4-5% hair per year, that almost amounts to 20-25% hair loss in 5 years.
