Keloid Treatment

Both conditions Keloid and Hypertrophic Scar present excessive tissue growth after an injury. Hypertrophic scar remains in the same size as the original injury or defect but Keloids tend to overgrow beyond the original defect. The exact cause of Keloids is unknown, both local and constitutional factors can be involved. The word Keloid is derived from the word Cheloid which means crabs claw.

Keloid can be defined as extra growth of tissue after an injury. Injury can be acne, burns, chicken pox, ear piercing, any cut, trauma, any surgery, vaccination site, minor scratches.

Mostly keloid occurs on chest, shoulder, ear lobes, however it can occur anywhere on the body. Both Keloid and Hypertrophic scar become thickened after 3 – 4 weeks of injury.
Flesh color, red or pink and dark/black in case of Indian skin
Mostly keloids are asymptomatic and don’t cause any problems for the patient. However sometimes they cause pain, itching & irritation.

Keloid Treatments:

Mostly Keloids can be treated by a trained dermatologist using various topical creams or minor surgeries. Treatment options are, topical creams like retinoic acid, silicone preparation, pressure bandages etc.

Keloids can also be treated with steroid injection & LASER.

Care & Prevention:

Recurrence of keloid is a major problem after treatment, hence prevention is an essential part of the treatment. Patients should avoid injury or any surgery in areas which are close to the keloid. A person who has had a keloid in the past is more likely to get it again following an injury. Special creams like IMIQUIMOD creams are used to prevent recurrence.
